Actually I started my interest in soft sculpture with classes in classical clay sculpture at the NYC School of Sculpture. I spent a lot of time at the NYC Natural Museum of History studying the animals and I would travel to the Bronx Zoo and do hundreds of sketches of animals for my sculptures. Eventually clay sculpture seemed too limiting and I liked the realistic warmth of soft sculpture. I settled on the cats because I have three cats of my own and I could use them as models. I decided my first design for KJ Lyons Design would be "The Cat". The cat was fiendishly difficult! I think my stubborn pride kept me going! But this method of design set the standard for KJ Lyons Design; realistic soft sculptures using original clay sculptures to design the patterns. ....My interest in cats? They say "eyes are a window into the soul". Ever since I was close enough to look straight into the eyes of a black panther at Central Park Zoo I've been caught. The depth of expression in those eyes; It struck me like an electric shock, I felt as though I could see into other realms by just studying that face. I have always found cats to be very expressive and there is such diversity in the cat family, I could spend my whole lifetime just studying the feline family.
Polar bears are my favorite bear subjects, again, it's that amazing face!
