My name is Marianne and I would like to tell you something about my bears and me.
The history of BeauT Bears is probably quite similar to those of so many other teddy bear artists, with one difference: at first I absolutely did not want to have anything to do with teddy bears. Sounds silly, what? Actually BeauT Bears thank their existence to the perseverance of one of my sisters (who was convinced I was absolutely-going-to-enjoy-bearmaking, and apparently she knew me better than I did ) and the fact that one day, early 1997, I could not resist a piece of plush fabric that crossed my path! My sister provided me with the necessary things such as eyes and joints, and soon after my first bear was born. At that time living in the city of Dordrecht less than a 5 minutes walk from one of Holland's most renowned teddy bear shops, speeded up my bear-making and designing skills.
BeauT Bears are often in colorful mohair, but I also like to work with traditional colours and in alpaca. Some of my bears have needlefelted faces and/or leather trapunto paws.
Why are my bears called BeauT Bears?
To explain this, you need to know that BeauT is pronounced 'boat'. Some people pronounce it as 'beauty' or 'beauté', which I like of course. And to be honest I feel flattered too, for I always try to make my bears as beautiful as I can. BeauT Bears, however, are called so because they are all born aboard an 1895-built sailing vessel, a Dutch klipper barge, where I live together with my husband Jan and our cats Indy (a cameo and white Maine Coon boy) and Lotte (a shorthaired calico girl).
